Join us for an expert discussion on the new Far Right in modern-day Europe, with perspectives from history, sociology and politics/international relations. This event is jointly organized by the CU Belgian Society, the CU European Society, the CU French Society and the CU German Society.
- Dr Hugo Drochon (Faculty of History, Cambridge) is a historian of late nineteenth and twentieth century political thought. His current research centres on elite theories of democracy and the impact their thinking had on the development of democratic theory in American and Europe after WWII.
- Prof. Montserrat Guibernau (Department of Sociology; POLIS, Cambridge) adopts a multidisciplinary intellectual agenda in politics and sociology, concerning key academic and policy debates about migration, nationalism and ethnic diversity in the EU and the US as well as the study of challenges posed by secessionism and ethnic violence. She is particularly interested in cultural issues of identity as well as political mobilisation, including the rise of populism and the resurgence of authoritarian regimes in the West. She has engaged in empirical research in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Catalonia, Quebec, the Veneto, Austria, Norway and most recently, Greece.
- Léonie de Jonge is conducting her PhD research (POLIS, Cambridge) on populism and xenophobia in small Western European States, focusing particularly on the success and failure of Right Wing populist parties with an anti-immigration agenda.
After a moderated discussion, the floor will be opened to questions from the audience.
